Jackson Kelly law firm to open Evansville office

EVANSVILLE — Charleston, W. Va.-based Jackson Kelly PLLC, a law firm which primarily represents the energy industry, including, oil, gas and coal companies, is bringing an office to Evansville.

Amanda Ramey, business development and communications manager of Jackson Kelley, said the location is still undetermined, but it is expected to be confirmed in a couple of weeks.

The office will be staffed by attorneys William C. Illingworth, Brandon S. Renner and Chad J. Sullivan, she said.

Jackson Kelley CEO Michael D. Foster said the expansion into Evansville is in response to continued client needs.

The firm currently has offices throughout the Ohio Valley and Rocky Mountain regions, including an Indianapolis location which was opened in July.

“The market demand for coal, which is growing in the Illinois Basin region of Western Kentucky, Indiana and Southern Illinois, is driving our clients to develop their assets in this region,” he said. “To better serve them, we are expanding our coal practice to establish a physical presence in the region where our clients are locating.”

Foster said all energy industries — those that produce as well as consume energy — face unprecedented regulations.

“It is essential that our clients’ legal issues are approached from both a local and industry perspective,” he said.

“Increased enforcement and oversight activity by the EPA, MSHA and other state and federal agencies require compliance with numerous complex legal requirements … We will help them meet those requirements while continuing to operate profitably.”

Sullivan, who will manage the local Jackson Kelly office, said “The Illinois Basin coalfields are expected to play a larger role nationally and internationally in energy production.

“Given the direct proximity of the port of Evansville (and Mount Vernon) on the inland waterways system, coal companies are able to export through the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for more expeditious delivery to international consumers.”

Both Illingworth and Renner’s practices will focus primarily on coal, oil and gas, real estate law and commercial transactions, while Sullivan will primarily focus on commercial litigation and labor and employment law.

Jackson Kelly is considered to be among the 250 largest law firms in the nation.
