Port of Liverpool persuades food giant to by-pass southern UK import gateways

Port of Liverpool 300

THE Port of Liverpool’s drive to persuade North West businesses to ship their materials directly to the Mersey, instead of through southern gateways, has achieved its first big success.

AB World Foods, one of the largest global manufacturers and importers of ethnic foods and ingredients, has signed a deal to use the Port of Liverpool as a UK import gateway.

Based at Leigh, in Lancashire, the company’s portfolio of brands includes Pataks, Blue Dragon and Tabasco. The agreement means that more than 1,800 TEU (20ft equivalent unit) of cargo annually (including import foodstuffs and raw materials from the Far East and India) will now come through Britain’s central gateway at Liverpool.

Formerly, this was shipped in through ports such as Felixstowe.

This will eliminate 300,000 UK road miles when compared to the company’s container cargoes entering the UK through ports on the south coast.

The deal will also reduce both haulage costs to AB World Foods and congestion on UK roads.
