R.I. private sector loses jobs in 4Q 2009, in line with regional trend

BOSTON – Newly compiled statistics from the New England office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that Rhode Island was among a majority of New England states that saw employment decline during the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a Business Employment Dynamic report released Thursday.

Rhode Island private sector employment fell 0.5 percent, losing 2,062 jobs, in the three months ended Dec. 31; New Hampshire and Maine private sector jobs also shrunk by 0.5 percent in the same period.

Massachusetts saw the largest employment decrease in the region with 14,490 jobs lost, falling 0.6 percent. In comparison, Vermont employment grew by 0.7 percent, or 1,641 jobs, making it the only New England state to post gains in the fourth quarter.

Overall, New England employment decreased by 26,665 jobs over the three-month period, compared with a loss of 39,396 in the third quarter. A majority of the job losses were due to downsizing companies, while the remaining 17 percent was due to the closing of establishments.

Since March 2009, job losses in New England’s private sector have been increasingly less severe.

The New England Office’s Business Employment Dynamic report used data from the bureau’s Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program to provide an overall picture of the region’s labor market.
